How to Choose the Right Korean Perm

A good Korean-style perm should work with your haircut, hair density and morning routine. The goal is not simply “more curl”: it is controlled movement that makes the finished shape easier to wear.

Start with the result, not the rod size

Bring two or three reference photos and point out what you like in each one: lift at the fringe, a loose bend, visible curl or a flatter outline at the sides. Photos are a starting point rather than a guarantee because the same technique behaves differently on fine, thick, straight or previously treated hair.

Explain how you normally dry and style your hair. A shape that looks excellent after a full blow-dry may not suit someone who wants to towel-dry and leave home in five minutes.

Texture perm, full perm or perm with a cut?

A natural texture perm is for soft movement and body. A fuller perm creates a clearer curl pattern. A perm-and-cut appointment lets the haircut be shaped around the new movement, which is usually the most complete option when you also need length removed.

If the sides are the main problem, a down perm may be the more focused service. It is designed to make outward-growing side hair sit closer to the head rather than adding curl through the top.

Check your hair history

Tell your stylist about bleach, permanent colour, straightening, relaxers and previous perms—even if they were months ago. Chemical history changes what is realistic and whether a strand test or a different plan is needed. Healthy-looking hair can still be sensitised internally.

Plan the first week

Ask when to shampoo, which products to use and how to dry the result. Advice depends on the products and process used, so follow the instructions from your appointment. For day-to-day styling, start with less product than you think: distribute it through damp hair, scrunch gently and avoid repeatedly brushing the curl apart.

Best consultation question: “What will this look like when I style it myself?”

Frequently asked questions

Which Korean perm is best for men?

The best choice depends on the movement you want, your hair condition and how you style it. A texture perm gives softer movement; a fuller perm creates a clearer curl pattern; a down perm focuses on sides that stick out.

How should I prepare for a perm consultation?

Bring two or three reference photos, explain your normal styling routine and disclose all previous bleach, colour, straightening and perm services.

Should I get a haircut with my perm?

A combined perm-and-cut appointment lets the haircut be shaped around the new curl pattern, especially when you also need length or weight removed.
