Down Perm Aftercare: Keep the Sides Neat

A Korean down perm changes how stubborn side hair sits, creating a cleaner outline without relying on heavy wax every morning. Good aftercare protects that result and keeps the scalp comfortable.

Follow your stylist’s wash timing

Do not guess when to shampoo after the service. The right timing depends on the formula and process used, so use the instructions given at your appointment. When you do wash, use comfortably warm—not very hot—water and massage the scalp with your fingertips rather than scratching.

Dry in the direction you want

Press excess water out with a towel instead of roughing the sides upward. If you blow-dry, direct the airflow down and back while smoothing the hair with your hand. High heat is rarely necessary; controlled direction matters more.

Use light product

Start with a small amount of cream, balm or light wax. Warm it between your hands, then smooth the sides before styling the top. Too much product can make short hair separate, look greasy and require more aggressive washing.

Know when the result is growing out

A down perm does not stop new growth. As fresh hair appears at the root, the natural outward direction gradually returns. How quickly this becomes noticeable depends on growth rate, haircut length and hair strength. Rather than overlapping chemical services automatically, ask your stylist to assess the condition and new growth.

Call if the scalp feels wrong

A little awareness immediately after a chemical service can occur, but persistent burning, blistering, swelling or worsening irritation is not routine aftercare. Rinse as advised and seek appropriate medical help if symptoms are severe or continue.

Quick routine: gentle wash, downward airflow, then a small amount of light product.

Frequently asked questions

How do you look after a down perm?

Follow your stylist’s wash timing, use warm rather than very hot water, dry the sides downward and apply only a small amount of light styling product.

How long does a down perm stay flat?

The visible result varies with growth rate, haircut length and hair strength. New root growth gradually restores the natural outward direction.

Can I blow-dry a down perm?

Yes. Use controlled, moderate heat and direct the airflow down and back while smoothing the sides with your hand.
